Released on Dec. 25, 2025, the second movie installment in the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (FNAF) film series left critics and fans divided. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 13%, compared to the 88% it received by fans.
As someone who is a fan of the Five Nights at Freddy’s video game series, I have complicated feelings for the most recent movie as an addition to the series.
Five Nights at Freddy’s, as a series, has strong horror value and storytelling, following Michael Afton on his journey to figure out what happened to the missing children and his father’s involvement in it. This being said, I do not think the movies hold the ability to serve the story justice.
The movie follows the events of the first installment and mirrors those of the second game. It follows Abby, Mike and Vanessa once more, now showcasing them investigating the original Freddy’s restaurant location. They follow Vanessa’s connection to the murder of Charlie Emily and how it relates to the missing children and her transformation into the Puppet.
In my opinion, the movie could have been much better while maintaining the same plot points. It was not a bad movie, but it left more questions than answers. I personally feel that, as an independent piece and a sequel to the first movie, it serves its purpose. I believe that, as an addition to the FNAF series and its overarching storyline, it makes it unclear what they’re trying to accomplish. It leaves many plot points open in ways that I feel will be difficult to solve in later films. I also think that the writers straying from some important aspects of the games and keeping others, while not being entirely clear about their intentions, makes the movies very confusing for fans of the game series.
I do not think this is a bad movie. I think it was a fun experience and I enjoyed watching it. I hope they can sort out the story in later installments and not leave fans in the dark about what is going on.
I would also encourage anyone interested enough in the FNAF series to have read this article to watch the film themselves and come to their own conclusion. This is simply my opinion and is not a tell-all on whether the movie is good or not.
