In association with Marvel Studios, five words that have a huge impact on a film. “Madame Web” is the newest release from Sony Pictures Releasing, in association with Marvel Studios. The film release has not sent shockwaves through the internet, but instead has become somewhat of a joke.
The biggest thing to realize is if you go see “Madame Web”, you will quickly realize that it is not a Marvel universe movie, but a standalone universe. Many who went to see the film expecting the Marvel universe were disappointed. The film also left film critics and random watchers wanting a refund. With only 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 2.6 out of 5-star review on Google, it is no wonder the movie flopped at the box office.
The film starts in an ambulance, racing to the hospital, and Cassandra Web (played by Dakota Johnson) driving. Not only would the patient be dead, due to the inconsistent compressions done by Webs’ partner, but also due to the lack of thrill this scene fails to bring. One reviewer on Google said, “Johnson’s numb facial expressions and wooden acting was enough to kill even me and my happiness,” when describing their thoughts on the film’s first few minutes.
The movie continues on a path of predictable lackluster events, with one reviewer calling it a “tangled mess.” The villain in the film is your basic superhero villain who sees their future demise and tries everything they can to stop it, but ultimately fails. An interesting choice the filmmakers made was dubbing the villain’s voice, leaving viewers laughing at him rather than being scared or intimidated by him.
Multiple reviewers said the script felt like AI wrote it with a poorly done, disjointed plot. One of the main ideas the film tried to portray and lead up to was about motherhood and the lengths mothers would go to for their children to be happy and healthy. However, this is only brought to life for a few minutes towards the film’s end. It was glossed over, and as one reviewer states, “The writers should be fired for how bad this script is.”
Overall, the film seems to be getting ripped to shreds by reviewers and commenters online, possibly for some good reasons. Multiple people on social media and in reviews have said do not waste your money on this sub-par film and if they could give it zero stars they could.
