What implications might Zohran Mamdani’s victory have for the Democratic Party and American politics going forward?
Nov. 4. 2025 saw various elections held across the nation, but perhaps the most notable election out of them all, gaining international prominence, was the New York City Mayoral race. Wherein, Democratic Zohran Mamdani claimed victory against former Governor Andrew Cuomo. With a commanding lead holding over 50% of the votes, what might Zohran’s victory mean for the future of the Democratic party and America as a whole?
The Mamdani campaign saw about 90,000 volunteers canvassing around the city, door-knocking, calling phones and getting the campaign’s message out there to the five Boroughs. Having raised $13 million from public funds, the campaign saw a prominent grassroots movement form, ultimately working towards Zohran’s victory.
In opposition to Zohran, Andrew Cuomo had tens of millions of dollars on his side from billionaire funded super PACs, notably…Hedge fund manager Bill Ackman spent $1.75 million on the campaign within the Defend NYC and Fix the City Super PACs. Cofounder of Airbnb, Joe Gebbia, spent $2 million in total to Fix the City and Defend NYC. Former three-term mayor of NYC, Michael Bloomberg, spent over $13 million on the Cuomo campaign, both within the primary, and the general election.
Despite those efforts, countless attack ads and a significant endorsement from President Donald Trump, Andrew Cuomo could not bridge the gap Zohran Mamdani commanded over the establishment.
So, what does this historic win against the establishment really mean for the future of American politics? Most notably, we have seen a shift in the sentiment around “socialism.” Zohran Mamdani is a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist, touting multiple agendas on his campaign website that most people would once balk at.
Zohran campaigned on various leftist policies, including freezing the rent, establishing free buses, city-owned grocery stores and free childcare. He incurred attacks from various politicians and media conglomerates alike, including President Donald Trump, who labeled Zohran as a “communist.”
Despite that, and the long-standing stigma against progressive policies, Zohran Mamdani clutched victory from the Democratic Primary, entering into the General Election several months later. He never stopped working, his supporters never stopped campaigning and canvasing and every effort to discredit him failed. Zohran has won, and from that victory, potentially established a new precedent for what is possible as a leftist politician.
When Kamala Harris lost the Presidential election, Democrats were left with the glaring question of why, and what they could change in the future. The answer might lie with Mamdani. This election shows the passion and energy Democrats have for progressive policies that center themselves around affordability.
People are tired of business-as-usual, geriatric, establishmentary politicians who uphold the status quo when people struggle to get by. Mamdani is young, progressive and does not deny the state of the economy; he acknowledges it, and even more, gives solutions to the problems everyday Americans feel.
When asked what to change, the Democratic National Committee, DNC, said the issue was with publicity. Kamala was not on podcasts, so she did not get the online vote. I argue that publicity is not the issue: it is policy.
It does not matter how loud your message is–if people do not feel seen in it, they will not support it. Mamdani shows that through his success. His policies struck a chord with New Yorkers, and invigorated demographics that Democrats have been struggling to recapture, particularly men.
What is more though, beyond the policies Mamdani campaigned on, is he also held resolute on his support of Palestine. He faced constant attacks as a Muslim man and as an anti-Zionist, often in bad faith. Despite that, he captured the majority of voters, once again showing that the problem lies not with the reach of a message, but the content of it.
In the end, Zohran’s motion as a candidate, and his victory, goes to show that victory lies within progressive policies. A shift to the left is necessary for the Democratic party to reclaim power amidst the authoritarian Trump administration. Constantly capitulating to the right or trying to play as a “centrist” will only move the line further right. Real progressive change is needed.
Will the DNC adapt and use Zohran’s victory as a sign? To be honest, I doubt it, as they seem committed to taking the wrong lessons from every loss, but that is why it is important for voters to speak out and continue to advocate for progressive policies that will not ignore the problems present in America.
Speak out, stay loud and continue to advocate for progressive policies and candidates.
