In 2011, the worlds of the Muppets and modern music united in a fun and wacky way with the release of “The Green Album.” This album was created as a tribute to the classic songs performed by the beloved characters on “The Muppet Show,” giving them a revamped and restyled sound with the help of popular artists from every genre.
The album was released by Walt Disney Records as part of the promotion for the upcoming movie simply titled “The Muppets.” Instead of the original Muppet performances, the songs were reimagined by several bands and musicians, each bringing their own style to the mix.
Several popular artists participated in the project. For example, OK Go performed a lively rendition of “The Muppet Show Theme,” while Weezer recorded their take on “Rainbow Connection”- arguably the most popular show in the franchise. Other artists included bands such as Paramore, My Morning Jacket and The Fray.
Some artists preferred to stay closer to the original versions, while others added new styles such as alternative rock or indie music. This variety made the album intriguing to both original Muppet fans and younger listeners who recognize the bands involved in the project.
The Muppets have always mixed humor and music, and this album continues this tradition in a fun, new way. By inserting modern musicians into preexisting songs, the Muppets can prove that their music can still feel fresh and relevant decades later.
