Almost everyone has interests that they are worried they will be judged for. Maybe you watch anime, or you play some niche video game nobody you know has ever heard about. Conventions, whether they be local or distant, are the perfect place to get your geek on!
I recently went to PeoriaCon, a yearly convention held a couple hours north of Mattoon, and it’s the third convention I have been to. Whether you want to get your own art out there, you are looking for some exclusive merch or you just want to find some people who share your interests, conventions are the perfect place to go!
There are comic conventions, anime conventions, horror conventions and every other genre you can think of. This means you can find a con for whatever you are interested in. It can be hard to find people who share your interests if you live in a small town, so conventions expedite the process significantly. You will also most likely meet and talk to other people that have similar interests–some people have met lifelong friends at these events!
I know what my favorite part of conventions are: the shopping! Cons host many vendors and local creators to help fund the event, which means more cool merch for you! That does not mean it is all merch though, as there are plenty of vendors selling other goods such as bags, shirts and even food! Conventions often will host various actors and voice actors, so you could even meet an idol or inspiration to you. Check the website for the convention you are interested in to see details on which guests will be there.
If you are an artist, cons are a great way to put yourself out there! Not only with buyers, but also with other artists and future business partners. You could get tips on how to network with professionals or learn how to advertise. This goes for all creators, be it painters, sculptors or even cosplayers!
My experience with conventions has shown me a new world of fandom I had previously only dreamed of. If you attend a con, remember to drink water and have fun!
