It is with a heavy heart that Catherine O’Hara passed away at the age of 71. She passed on Jan. 30, 2026, and it was determined that her cause of death was Dextrocardia. Dextrocardia is a rare heart condition conceived during the first few weeks of pregnancy; as that is when the baby’s heart is developing. Normally, the heart points to the left side of the chest, but in this condition, it points to the right side, and the reasons for this are unclear. This condition is also referred to as cardiac inversus.
For those who do not know much about O’Hara, she was a Canadian actress best known for her writing and comedic genius in film, television and sketch comedy. Her most notable roles in the film industry included Kate McCallister in “Home Alone”, and Delia Deetz in “Beetlejuice”.
When Catherine was acting, it almost felt like she was not acting. Her characters always felt so real, and it made fans feel like they were watching someone in real life rather than on a screen. That is what made her acting and her characters so iconic; the ability for an actor or actress to make the audience feel as if they were not watching fictional characters, but real life, is a rare art nowadays.
Catherine was groundbreaking for her incredible acting and captivating performances. Catherine always went above and beyond with her roles, which is one of the reasons why she was such an amazing actress. She could always take something completely ordinary, like, a protagonist’s mother, and make it something truly extraordinary.
Even though Catherine left the world, her laughter and legacy will stay here forever. “When you do something that people watch and enjoy as children, that’s great because it stays with you, throughout your life. The things you loved as a child stay with you, and so do the people who were in those things.” – Catherine O’Hara.
