United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence in Minneapolis has been rampant throughout the first weeks into 2026, leaving one woman dead and several others detained and injured. The most noticeable incidents occurred on Jan. 7, which included the fatal shooting of a U.S citizen and the detainment of a teacher at a high school campus.
In the early hours of Jan. 7, ICE agents were conducting operations near residential neighborhoods when several Minneapolis residents gathered outside to protest. One altercation between ICE agents and a woman driving was filmed and uploaded, where it appears the agents walk up to her vehicle, she tries to drive off and then was shot three times before the vehicle veered off into a pole.
The entire incident was filmed, and different angles were uploaded online, which has sparked debate over whether the shooting was justified or not. President Trump quickly took to X to give a statement supporting the agent’s actions, claiming he was attacked by the woman and her vehicle and shot in self-defense. Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security also gave a response to the incident, stating the woman was “engaged in an act of domestic terrorism” and the agent who shot her feared for his life.
That same afternoon ICE also stopped at Roosevelt High School during dismissal, which resulted in chaos for students, staff and parents present. The Department of Homeland Security clarified that ICE agents were following a U.S citizen who happened to stop in the school zone when they approached him and had a confrontation with bystanders at the school.
However, in videos uploaded online, agents are seen not only detaining the man but tackling him into the snow and punching him, as well as pushing students and bystanders into the snow. Videos of the incident rapidly spread to social media and news outlets, and currently have Americans terrified of the uprising in violence seen from these federal agents.
These brutal and terrifying events highlight the intimidation and recurring violence used from ICE agents against U.S. citizens and immigrants alike. While the community in Minneapolis has come together to honor the life lost and stayed strong in efforts to scare away ICE officials, the government has not backed down, stating more ICE officers are headed towards Minnesota.
