Nov. 4, 2025, saw various elections held from one side of the country to the other. Gubernatorial races held in New Jersey and Virginia, a myriad of Mayoral races across the country and notable ballot measures like Proposition 50. With so many races to cover, here are the results of key elections held across the country this November.
Democrats saw major victories across the board, winning key races in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and California. The major factors driving voters were cited to be the economy and the uncertainty of the country.
Democrats Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia won the Governorship over their Republican opposition, with Abigail Spanberger becoming Virginia’s first female governor and making history for the state.
In Virginia, despite mounting scandal around his rhetoric, Democrat Jay Jones defeated Republican incumbent Jason Miyares for Attorney General, contributing to a democratic shift in the state.
In New York City, Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani claimed victory over the moderate former governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent. This race held the attention of the entire country, and even internationally, as this victory for Mamdani potentially serves as a sign of a changing Democratic party.
Looking at ballot measures, Colorado voters approved Proposition MM in an approximate 60-40 split, which will increase taxes on individuals making $300k or more a year to fund universal free breakfast and lunch for K-12 students.
Lastly, California voters said “yes” to Proposition 50, a redistricting measure set to combat gerrymandering efforts in Republican states like Texas. Proposition 50 won a significant portion of the votes in an approximate 65-35 split.
Questions still stand as to the success of California’s proposition, or whether Zohran Mamdani’s victory may be a sign for political change, but what matters most to make change happen is not just the results of the election, but the continued activism from voters afterwards. Whatever happens is in the hands of the people.
