This year, Kailyn Tracy is the Student Government Association’s (SGA) Secretary—a role she is ecstatic to have the privilege of filling.
Ever since joining SGA, Kailyn has fostered important connections and used said connections to foster positive change. “I truly feel like my thoughts and opinions are valued by my fellow delegates, as well as the administration,” she said, “Being Secretary has allowed me to get to know so many new people and have a more active role in SGA, which I am currently enjoying.”
Kailyn focuses primarily on creating a positive experience for the student body. During meetings, she vets for numerous quality-of-life changes, the likes of which are currently in development. She also works at The Navigator News as the Editor-in-Chief, where her compassionate personality has helped her in unexpected ways. On this, she states that, “Leadership, as I have come to know it, is ensuring that those around me are able to work together and achieve what we have all set out to accomplish. A leader guides people, helping them reach their fullest potential.”
Kailyn learned these lessons in her hometown of Mattoon, IL. Recently, she participated in the Miss Coles County Fair Queen Pageant and won the fitting “Miss Congeniality” award. She strives to stay true to herself, but tries just as hard to step out of her comfort zone in the name of personal development.
She recommends the same to incoming Lake Land College (LLC) students. “As someone who joined SGA in December of my freshman year, I honestly wish I had joined sooner. So, if you are interested in something, like one of Lake Land’s many clubs, I would say at least give it a shot. There is no shame in trying something new and finding out it just wasn’t the right fit, because it may also turn out to be one of the best things you’ve ever done!”
At the end of the meeting, Kailyn had one last sentiment: “I want to leave behind a legacy of kindness and compassion. If I can make just one person feel valued by the time I leave Lake Land, then that would be the perfect legacy for me.”
