Handshake is a free app for students to use as a resource for connecting with local employers who are hiring. This app can help you get set up with both jobs and internships. The Student Activity Board (SAB) weekly event on Oct. 1, 2025, held in Laker Point, touched base on how students can create a free account while offering free donuts provided by Holey Moley to those who signed up. The event was also held at the Effingham Technology Center (ETC) on Oct. 1, 2025, from 10 a.m. to noon. In total, there were about 100 students present at the event at Mattoon, along with several staff members. There were also Career Services representatives on campus during the event to help you get your electronic signature set up.  

There were several different businesses on campus during this beneficial event, including Hudson Technology Company, Stevens Industries, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Applied Pavement Technology, Inc., Union Health, JM Test Systems and Rural King.  

These businesses provided students with informational materials, such as business cards and booklets for those interested in pursuing a career in one of these businesses. Not only did these businesses provide physical information, but they also provided more verbal information about their business. 

While there were not any employers on site during the event at the ETC, there were still opportunities to learn about Handshake, that way students could still learn about this resource. 

This event presented numerous opportunities for students looking to join the workforce after they graduate from Lake Land College. It not only provided a free and easy to use resource for employment but also made it possible for students to establish networks with different businesses.
