Lake Land College’s (LLC) Broadcasting Club has been around for almost 50 years, but they continue to be an excellent club option for students who are looking to get involved on campus. The Broadcasting Club provides students with the ability to meet, collaborate and learn with other students and knowledgeable staff. Greg Powers, the director of LLC’s Broadcast Communication program and advisor for the Broadcasting Club shares that “It [the club] is a social voice for not only broadcast students, but maybe some students who aren’t broadcast majors. You do not have to be a broadcast major to join the club, and we try to have it as an endeavor and outlet for people who are maybe interested in the industry.”
In the Broadcasting Club, students have the ability to participate and contribute to the operation of LLC’s very own, student-run radio station, WLKL 89.9 FM, or to help with live broadcasts, sometimes for LLC events, both of which are very fun and unique opportunities. Powers also mentions that the club takes part in some annual events, including the running of a food drive at LLC in order to give back to the community, and a visit to the Illinois Broadcasters Association, which features student awards and a student session. Currently, the club is selling candy bars in order to fundraise for the quality and operation of the club. Powers mentions that fundraisers, such as this one, enable the students the ability to participate in various activities, such as the ability to visit an official, local TV or radio station!
LLC’s Broadcasting Club is celebrating its 50 Anniversary at the end of this month, where the club’s alumni have the chance to come visit campus, have a meal and even do some live chats on air as they reminisce on their days at LLC and in the club. What an exciting opportunity for those young and old! We love seeing LLC alumni reconnecting with campus.
When asked what he would say to students considering joining the Broadcasting Club, Powers encouraged, “Do it! We’d love to have you, again, even if you are not a broadcasting major but are looking for a place to call home. We’ve got a variety of personalities, variety of interests and we are pretty easy-going people, so the more, the merrier!” If you are interested in learning more about or joining LLC’s Broadcasting Club, please contact Greg Powers at [email protected] or (217) 234-5335.
