On Jan. 21, the Laker cheer team held a “Kiddie Cheer Camp.” 15 children ranging from preschool to fifth grade registered at the camp to learn cheers for the Laker cheerleaders. This camp took place in the Laker Fieldhouse from 9-11am, with registration starting at 8:30 am. The kids returned to campus at 3 the same day to cheer during halftime at the men’s Laker Basketball team’s game.

Haili Denning, the Head Cheer Coach at Lake Land College (LLC), and the Laker cheerleaders led the camp. Cost of registration was $25 per kid. All of the money made at the camp was put towards the cheer team’s trip to Daytona Beach, Florida for Nationals. The team will be participating in Nationals on April 5-9. This was made possible for the team by an earned bid.

Although this was Denning’s first time hosting this event as the coach, the cheer team has held this event before in previous years. She expressed that she plans to continue hosting this camp annually. Denning described the purpose as the camp by stating that, “We are hoping to reach out to the community like we like to do at all of our community events to get as many kids involved in this event.”

Denning and the cheer team hope to see a positive impact in the community from their event. She stated, “Our big focus is to be involved in the community. We try to attend all community events and do more things focusing on kids to draw people in. We are always looking for recruits!” Hopefully the future Laker cheerleaders that attended this camp had an amazing time learning cheers!
