Elizabeth Cable is your 2023-2024 Parliamentarian for the Student Government Association (SGA). Cable is a sophomore agriculture transfer student who plans to attend Western Illinois University. There, she plans to major in agriculture education and minor in animal sciences.
Cable grew up on a small family farm and has always loved being surrounded by animals. This is what inspired her to want to teach agriculture and help her community understand more about the industry. Cable believes there is a general misunderstanding between agriculturists and the public. She hopes to be able to help bridge that gap.
Horses and dogs have won Cable’s heart as her favorite animals. “They are much like us. They definitely read into our feelings, and they feel the same way that we do,” she said. Cable credits these two animals with helping her mental health. She finds comfort in going home to them.
Cable’s SGA journey started as a Sophomore Delegate, unsure whether this was a good fit for her. She recently became parliamentarian and says this was a big step for her going outside her comfort zone. “It is a real confidence booster,” she said when asked about what she would say to others questioning about joining SGA. “Take a leap of faith and just do it. Join a club and get involved.” Cable credits SGA for helping her with her leadership skills and putting herself out there.
Meeting new people is a big part of SGA, and Cable says she has built lifelong friendships since joining. “The connections that you get to build with your fellow students on campus are a big deal.” She continues by explaining how SGA isn’t political and is more about being a voice for her fellow students. “We are there to advocate for you. We are not there to judge you. We are there to help you and help the campus.”
