Another Sonic Movie
April 25, 2022
Spoilers Ahead!
The “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise has been around for two centuries with Sega and like the bright blue hedgehog, they are not planning on slowing down. The second movie in the franchise was released in theaters on April 8.
“Sonic the Hedgehog” features a blue hedgehog (Voiced by Ben Shwartz) who harnesses an unknown power of superspeed. He is first guarded by an owl named LongClaw, a character who is introduced in the first film, but they get ambushed in their home. LongClaw sacrifices themself so Sonic can escape.
He then travels to Green Hill where he is supposed to stay hidden for his safety. However, Sonic continues to use his power as he shows some characteristics of teenage rebellion. This causes Sonic to catch the attention of an evil man named Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey, Sonic seeks help and confides in sheriff Tom Wachoski, played by James Marsden. Together Wachoski and Sonic defeat Eggman and trap him in an alternate universe on a mushroom planet.
This backstory is important because “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” opens with Eggman on this mushroom planet. He is seen trying to get off the planet, and back to his own world. To do so he creates some sort of signal device out of mushrooms and one piece of Sonic’s fur.
However, the signal does not take him to Sonic. The signal he ends up following takes him to a red Echidna named Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba. Knuckles had been traveling the universe looking for Sonic too.
LongClaw was not only Sonic’s protector, but also the protector of the green emerald, known as the Master Emerald. This Master Emerald is the seven chaos emeralds all forged into one gem. It is one of the most powerful weapons. This gem was sent to Earth by LongClaw to keep it out of unworthy or dangerous hands. LongClaw also hides a special compass that will point to the Master Emerald on the other side of the planet to try and keep it safe. This puts Sonic in danger as now both Knuckles and Eggman are after him for the Master Emerald.
However, Sonic is not alone, as he is joined by a two tailed fox named Miles “Tails” Prower, voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Together the two critters escape Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles. They then travel to try and find the compass. Once Sonic manages to retrieve the compass, the antagonists catch up to him and take it. They then, in turn, go to find the Master Emerald.
This leads to a fight scene between Sonic and Knuckles while Eggman steals the emerald and leaves them both. Trapped inside the underwater temple, Sonic swims to try and save Knuckles and in turn gets saved himself. The two then come together to defeat Eggman. The film wraps itself up with Sonic, Knuckles and Tails playing baseball and getting ice cream together.
I find that this is a great way to end a happy family movie. I love the design of Sonic, especially with the knowledge that after the release of the first movie’s trailer, the world came together to bully the designers into remaking him. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would rate it a total of five stars! I would recommend anyone who enjoys the Sonic franchise to watch this movie, as it is a fun loving and nostalgic film.
