The Student Success Center (SSC), originally known as the Tutoring Center, is located at Webb Hall in Room 130 on Lake Land College’s (LLC) main campus in Mattoon. The Tutoring Center was started in August 1990 by Karla Miller before her retirement in December 2021. Kim Hunter has been director of the SSC since January 2022.
According to Hunter, “the name change has been in the works for a long time. One of the goals is that people understand that the [SSC] offers more than just tutoring. Part of SSC includes study skills, working on test taking and overcoming test anxiety.”
She further elaborated that “In the (SSC), students often need help in things that are technology-based, such as how to use a graphic calculator and learning how to use Canvas.”
She emphasized “(SSC) still does specific tutoring. You can still get help in Math, English as well as Technology courses. However, you will get a holistic experience.”
She added that “Some specialized programs, such as the special admission programs, do not offer any tutoring for Automotive, John Deere, Physical Therapy (PT) or Massage courses. We, however, have someone that can help with study skills or prerequisite courses.”
“We do have a tutor for nursing, accounting and graphic design. We have a tutor in almost every subject and course that Lake Land offers.”
“We offer the Proctoring Center, which students who take on-line exams and courses, can set up time to take the exams on their own schedule. The name (SSC) is more of a comprehensive name title.”
She highlighted that “We still do community-based review testing and a place where students can do placement testing or redo testing to either improve scores or to get in a higher placement.”
She stressed “This is the place where people with disabilities and receive accommodations can take the exams with extra time if necessary.
She accentuated “examples of placement exams are when students are attempting to get into the Math or English course or opt out of the Reading class, they come here to take the exam called the Accuplacer.”
For the exams in the Proctoring Center, she stated that “the exams are for online courses only that the instructor for the said course has designated to be proctored. It comes down to the discretion of the instructor. Almost all online Math courses and most online Technology courses are proctored. There are many other courses online that will use the Proctoring Center also.”
Spread the word out throughout campus for students to take advantage of the resources that the SSC has provided. For more information, contact the SSC at either 217-234-5301 or [email protected].
