On May 16, 2025, Lake Land college had its graduation ceremony for the class of 2025. So technically, according to “student math”, Summer holiday began on Monday, May 19, 2025. A few afternoon naps later, it is September and classes have started.
Whether you escaped to your bed, clocked in all summer or treated the season like a change in weather rather than a break—whatever your vibe was from May to September, here are a few notable incidents that happened while you were living your life.
And no, this is not everything. Just a few highlights you might have missed (or did not miss if you stayed very current with the news.)
MAY
- WeightWatchers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after being in operation for 62 years and accumulating 1.1 billion dollars in debt.
- Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost became the first American Pope in history choosing the name Pope Leo the XIV as his papal name
- Qatar gifted President Donald Trump a Boeing 747-8 jet, said to cost 400 million dollars.
- Former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
- The Trump administration paused new student visa interviews and pushed social media screening for international applicants.
- The United States test-launched the Doomsday Minuteman III Nuclear Missiles.
- Florida banned gender-affirming care for minors.
- The U.S. Treasury announced they will stop making pennies in 2026.
- President Trump posted on social media that companies such as Apple could face 25% tariffs on cellphones manufactured outside of the United States.
JUNE
- President Trump hosted a military parade to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, coinciding with Trump’s 79th birthday and Flag Day.
- There was a “No Kings Protest” on the same day of President Trump’s birthday/Military Parade, reducing the attendance at the parade.
- Tinder tested a height filter. Devasted users said that, if implemented, “it would be over for Short kings”
- Elon Musk and President Trump had a dramatic fallout over money, power and policy, with Musk posting on X (Formerly Twitter) that President Trump is in the Epstein files.
- The National Guard was deployed to Los Angeles (LA) by President Trump in response to widespread protests and unrest triggered by federal immigration raids.
- Apple announced iOS 26, skipping versions 19 through 25, to synchronize its OS lineup. The update introduces “Liquid Glass,” a first ever universal design across all their devices.
- 244 child sex offenders were arrested, and 109 children were rescued during an investigation called Operation Soteria Shield, which consisted of 70 local law enforcement and the FBI.
- Heat waves broke out all over the US. Dozens of people were hospitalized, and videos of a road bursting open from the heat surfaced online, with multiple heat records being broken across the states.
- 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani won the primary for New York Mayor and if elected, he will be the first Muslim and Indian-American to be Mayor in U.S. history.
- Norwegian Tourist claims he was denied entry to the U.S. after border agents found a “Bald JD Vance” meme on his iPad. U.S. Customs and Border Protection argued that he was denied entry solely because he admitted to drug use.
- North Korea opened a beach resort in Wonsan, which spans 2.5 miles of coastline, and is built to accommodate 20,000 people at a time. There are 54 hotels there with slides, surfing, swimming, sunbathing and waterboarding facilities.
- Four fifth-graders in Arizona were arrested for allegedly plotting to murder a fellow student and stage it as a suicide. Police say one of the accused, a girl, was reportedly in a relationship with the victim, who had cheated on her.
- President Donald Trump shared a post claiming that Joe Biden was executed in 2022 and was replaced with clones or robots.
- A plane crashed in India, killing 241 people and leaving only one survivor. He was seated in an exit row, in seat 11A. The seat that Thai singer Ruangsak Loychusak sat when he survived Thai Airways Flight TG261 crash in 1998, which killed 101 people.
- Security Researchers reported 16 billion passwords and login credentials stolen in a massive data leak.
JULY
- Arizona shattered its heat record on August 7, 2025, when Phoenix hit a staggering 118°F (47.8°C)—the hottest August day since records began in 1895.
- Trump opened an immigration detention center unofficially called “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Florida Everglades.
- The 2025 National Health Care Fraud Takedown resulted in criminal charges against 324 defendants, including 96 medical professionals.
- Sean Diddy Combs was found not guilty on three out of the five charges he was charged with. He was found not guilty on Racketeering Conspiracy, and the Sex Trafficking of a women known as Jane and Cassie Ventura. He was found guilty of two lesser charges of transportation to engage in prostitution.
- A company called “Campus Guardian Angel” demonstrated how drones could save lives in school shootings. The idea is that 30 to 90 drones would be permanently stationed in schools and could confront the shooter within 15 seconds of launch.
- Ozzy Osborne passed away at the age of 76. It is said that he altered his will to make sure Sharon received flowers every week for the rest of her life.
- Hulk Hogan passed away due to a heart attack.
- A resident of Coconino County in Arizona died from the pneumonic plague.
AUGUST
- Some parts of the Sea of Galilee turned a vivid blood-red color.
- Aalborg Zoo in Denmark put out a public request for people to donate unwanted/surplus pets to be used as food for its predators. They requested chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and horses, explaining that it was to imitate the natural food chain.
- A resident of South Lake Tahoe in California died of the Pneumonic plague after being bitten by an infected flea.
- Fires called Dragon Bravo and White Sage burned in and around the north rim of the Grand Canyon, and it is believed to have started from lighting strikes. The Historic Grand Canyon Lodge was also burnt in the fires.
- Several radioactive wasps’ nests were discovered at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina.
- Walmart and other retailers recalled frozen shrimp across 18 states after the FDA detected radioactive contamination.
- U.S. Coast Guard offloaded a record-breaking 38 tons of cocaine and marijuana at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Officials stated that the cocaine alone contained enough to fatally overdose the entire population of Florida.
- A mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis left two children dead and 17 others injured during a morning Mass. The shooter, a former student, targeted the church with multiple firearms and died by suicide at the scene.
- President Trump put an end to the De Minimis Exemption, which allowed shipments valued under $800 to enter the country tax-free.
- On a lighter note, “Skibidi” and “Delulu” were officially added to the Cambridge dictionary.
While much of this news might be upsetting do not forget life is bigger than the headlines. There were many good things that happened as well, and even more happening every day, even if they do not get talked about.
