On July 21, 2023, Greta Van Fleet released their third full-length studio album, Starcatcher. The album was much anticipated by fans and just three days later they were able to enjoy the album live as the band kicked off a world tour.
Greta Van Fleet is a band from Michigan composed up of three brothers and one honorary brother. Josh Kiszka is the lead vocalist, Jake Kiszka is the guitarist, Sam Kiszka is the bassist, keys and backing vocals on this album and Daniel Wagner plays drums and backing vocals.
Starcatcher has a more refined sound than their earlier garage band, grunge sounding extended play (EP) From the Fires or their first album Anthem of the Peaceful Album. This left some fans upset, but most seemed to enjoy the album. An interesting aspect of the third album is the band focused more on recording their performances live rather than using a click track or overly producing the sound.
One of the fan favorite tracks is “Runway Blues.” This is a quicker paced song with a true rock sound. However, the song trails off and fades away after only one minute because Josh did not like the song or ending. It seems we are lucky to even have a minute of the song.
An exceptionally good single off the album is “Meeting the Master.” This song is about being devoted and a fervent follower of the “master” or teacher. The track starts calmly with just vocals and some acoustic guitar almost feeling as if floating in shallow waters with gentle waves. Eventually there is build up and we are swept up in emotion and devotion. Some could interpret this as a spiritual song, depending on what you believe in. Another great single is “The Falling Sky.” This is personally one of my favorite songs off the album, for me it is a song about going through the struggles of life and still making it through.
Another favorite of mine and a fan favorite is “The Archer.” This song is just impeccably well done. From the guitar to the drums to the vocals I cannot find a single thing to critique about the song. I may be biased from seeing the live performance of it, but all in all it is a brilliant track. It is an emotional ballad and tells a story of a lover who seeks vengeance for his dead love.
Greta Van Fleet is a fantastic band who seems to put their heart and soul into every song. As a fan I am eagerly awaiting their next album and tour.
