When I came to Lake Land College (LLC) from the Democratic Republic of Congo, it was to pursue my education in Criminal Justice. I was in a new country, far from my family, my culture and everything I’d ever known. I did not know a single person. Everything felt unfamiliar — the people, the weather and even the way of life. To be honest, when I first arrived, I thought, “Huh? This school is really in the middle of nowhere.” It did not feel like the America I had imagined. I was not sure if I belonged here. After my first semester, I was ready to leave.
Then I had my son, Alex, and transferring schools suddenly became very complicated. That is when everything changed. That is when Denver Daniels, the International Student Coordinator, became someone I will never forget. He supported me when I needed it most and helped me stay. His name will always be part of my story. I will forever be grateful for him.
As I continued my journey, I started seeing LLC differently. I saw that the professors here actually care. They want you to succeed and guide you through every step. My advisor, David Chambers, was one of those people — always kind, patient and encouraging.
I also began to get involved. I joined clubs like the International Student Club, THE VIBE, Student Activity Board and Laker Christian Fellowship. These organizations introduced me to some of the most amazing people. I found a community in the middle of uncertainty.
LLC also gave me my first job in the U.S. — at the bookstore. Later, I worked at the Print Shop, Student Life, Career Services and for The Navigator News, where I got to write and express myself. These experiences helped me grow, build confidence and connect with people from different walks of life. I’m especially thankful for Stephanie Anderson, one of my supervisors. She is one of the most supportive people I have had the privilege to work with.
One thing I’ll always treasure is how kind everyone has been — not just to me, but to my son, Alex. There were days I brought him with me to campus, and everyone who met him was so welcoming and sweet. That meant the world to me as a student and as a mother. Alex and I will always carry those memories with love.
Now, as I wrap up my time at LLC, I am getting ready for the next chapter. I will be transferring to Illinois State University to continue my education in Legal Studies. I am both nervous and excited, but I know I am ready because of everything I have learned here.
So, thank you, LLC, for everything.
Thank you to The Navigator News.
Thank you to the Student Life Office.
Thank you to every professor who taught me, believed in me and helped me grow.
This place gave me more than a degree — it gave me hope, strength and a story I’ll never forget.
With love,
Noella Kasera
