The hit Paramount + series “School Spirits” returns for another season, and audiences are in luck, as some of their most burning questions on the paranormal happenings at Split River High have finally been revealed!
Season one of “School Spirits” follows Maddie Nears, portrayed by Disney alum Payton List, after she wakes up in her school’s boiler room and none of her classmates can see her. That is, none of her living classmates. Maddie is now a ghost, navigating the afterlife and seemingly caught in purgatory along with her fellow ghostly counterparts, who all died on school grounds. Maddie soon learns that she can surprisingly still communicate with her living best friend, Simon Elroy, but only in certain areas of the school. The first season sees Maddie go on a mystery solving journey to figure out how she inexplicably died and why the town still cannot find her body. With the help of Simon and the ghosts of Split River High, Maddie uncovers closely kept secrets and bombshell lies, with everyone in town as a potential suspect.
Some of the many ghosts Maddie meets include the likes of Wally, a football player who was killed on the field during his senior homecoming game in the 1980s, Charley, who died in the cafeteria due to a severe peanut allergy in the 1990s and Rhonda, a spirit from the 1960s who was murdered by her guidance counselor.
Season two picks up right where season one left off, with Maddie and her group of paranormal friends now tirelessly trying to get Maddie’s body back. Audiences were taken aback when it was revealed that Janet, a ghost from the 1950s, jumped into Maddie’s body prior to season one of “School Spirits” and is the reason why Maddie is stuck in the school as a ghost in the first place. Janet is now on the run, causing chaos in Maddie’s body as Maddie’s living friends try to catch up to her.
A major development in season two came with the discovery of the ghost’s “keys,” which consist of important objects that were with each person when they died. These keys turned out to be portals to the ghostly teenager’s “scars,” where they are forced to relive nightmarish versions of their deaths.
New characters are also introduced this season, both from the land of the living and the ghostly world of Split River High. Viewers come to know Yuri, a ghost from the 1970s who had a panic attack in the greenhouse which, coupled with his asthma, killed him. He becomes very close with Charley, semi-reluctantly joining the group. The other main addition to Maddie’s mystery solving group is Quinn, a fellow ghost and member of the school’s marching band who died in the early 2000s.
The motives of Janet, along with her fellow scientist and teacher Mr. Martin, are also explored in season two. Viewers were shocked when it was revealed that Mr. Martin was experimenting on Janet, who quickly became an unwilling participant, and was planning on trapping all of the ghosts in their own scars in an attempt to disrupt the mysterious barrier surrounding Split River High and escape.
At the end of season two, Maddie is finally able to return to her body and reunite with her mother. Janet is given the chance to cross over, but she decides to stay, claiming that she has unfinished business with Mr. Martin and the inner workings of the school’s purgatory. However, Maddie’s story is far from over. Somehow, Simon got stuck in the school and is now a ghost himself!
All in all, “School Spirits” season two delivered a clever and hilariously paranormal story that continues to keep fans thoroughly entertained.
