This month’s SGA Spotlight shines on Nate Carlin, a sophomore at Lake Land College majoring in Physical Education. Originally from Mattoon, Illinois, Nate’s path to Lake Land College was influenced by his close friends and his best friend’s surprising invitation to join the cheer team.
Nate’s leadership journey began with the LIFT class during his senior year of high school. Inspired by the lessons and experiences he gained, he decided to run for the Student Government Association. To his surprise, he was elected—a decision he describes as “the greatest decision I have ever made.” Since then, Nate has embraced his role as a sophomore delegate, attending meetings and contributing his skills to help SGA initiatives succeed.
Outside of SGA, Nate enjoys listening to Taylor Swift, playing tennis and participating in various campus organizations, including SAB, The Navigator and NSLS. His involvement across campus reflects his passion for building connections and creating a sense of community.
Nate’s role in SGA has also allowed him to take on meaningful projects. He’s helping organize a blood drive, the Dunk Tank at the Spring Carnival and the upcoming student elections. He’s incredibly excited about an upcoming trip to Springfield to meet with representatives — a key opportunity to strengthen student advocacy.
When asked about the most rewarding part of SGA, Nate points to the connections he’s built. “Being part of the SGA is rewarding because it allows you to make a real impact on campus life,” he shares. “Whether it’s through advocating for students or organizing events, it’s all about helping students feel heard.”
Nate encourages any student thinking about joining SGA to do it. “Do it. It is so much fun and so rewarding. You won’t regret it,” he says. Nate’s story reminds us that leadership starts with a single step—and sometimes, a little encouragement from a friend.
