This month’s SGA Spotlight shines on Shayden Hogg, a dedicated sophomore in Lake Land College’s Agricultural Production and Management program. Born and raised on a dairy and grain farm south of Highland, Illinois, Shayden’s journey to Lake Land College was inspired by its welcoming, “homey” feel and the close-knit community it offers.
From a young age, Shayden knew agriculture would play a significant role in her life. After graduation, she plans to transfer to Murray State University in Animal Science major, with a focus on bovine embryology and artificial insemination. Her ultimate goal is to improve cattle genetics in her local community. Beyond academics, she has a passion for showing beef cattle, working alongside her brother and sister to carry on her family’s farming traditions.
Shayden joined the Student Government Association in the spring of 2024, thanks to the encouragement of the former SGA president, Madilyn. Her role as Public Information Officer allows her to connect with the student body by creating and sharing posts about SGA initiatives and events. “Networking is one of the best aspects of SGA,” Shayden shares, “Whether it is with students, professors or industry professionals, SGA helps you grow in every way.”
Outside of SGA, Shayden’s love for agriculture continues to shine. She started an Adopt-A-Calf program, which connects students with the farming experience by sharing updates and pictures of calves. Shayden also channels her creativity into her jewelry business, where she crafts unique pieces by recycling old denim and leather into earrings.
Currently, Shayden is developing a workshop for the High School Leadership Conference. Focused on the role of social media in fostering clear communication, her workshop aims to leave a meaningful impact on at least one student. Despite never attending this conference as a high school student, Shayden is eager to help others explore leadership opportunities.
Shayden finds the most rewarding part of SGA to be the connections and memories she’s made. “SGA has given me opportunities and knowledge that I would not have gained just going to class,” she explains. Her involvement has also taught her the importance of listening and advocating for others, skills she plans to carry into her future career in agriculture
For students considering joining SGA, Shayden’s advice is simple: “Do it! You never know until you try.” With her inspiring story and dedication to both her studies and community, Shayden is a shining example of what it means to be a student leader.
