For over 27 years, Lisa Leish has been a familiar and welcoming face at Lake Land College. Her journey with the college began in 1981 when she enrolled in the Cosmetology program at just 16 years old. Inspired by her mother, a hairdresser, Lisa pursued her passion in the field for a few years before exploring other career paths, including cake decorating.
By 1995, Lisa was searching for more than just a job. Encouraged by her cousin, Cindy Lanman, who worked at Lake Land, Lisa returned to college to study Management. While attending classes, she worked part-time in the Admissions and Records Office and through the Federal Work Study program in Counseling Services. These experiences deepened her connection with the college and led to her being hired as the Secretary to Counselors just days after graduating.
Since then, Lisa has held various roles in Counseling Services, with her current title being Counseling Services Operations Specialist. In this role, she manages everything from helping students schedule appointments and assisting those in crisis to answering calls and emails from prospective students. Lisa’s days are never the same, which she loves. “You never know what the day will bring,” she shares.
For Lisa, the most rewarding part of her job is helping students succeed. Whether it’s walking a stressed student to another office or connecting them with resources, she finds joy in making a difference. One of her most memorable moments came when a non-traditional student asked Lisa to attend her graduation. The student, who had overcome many challenges, publicly credited Lisa and other staff for their encouragement.
Lisa’s impact extends beyond her daily tasks. She is a founding member of the Student Services Endowed Scholarship, which has provided over $35,000 in financial assistance to students. She’s especially proud that one of their first recipients, Ike Nwosu, is now the college’s Vice President for Academic Services.
Reflecting on her long career, Lisa says the changes in technology have been the most significant. When she started, there were no computers or online courses. Today, technology plays a major role in helping students and staff alike.
Outside of work, Lisa believes in taking care of her own mental health through counseling and practices like Taekwondo—she even earned a purple belt through classes at Lake Land College!
As Lisa looks ahead to her retirement in 2027, her dedication to the college and its students remains as strong as ever. She sums up her experience simply: “It has been my pleasure and honor to serve Lake Land College students.” “Get to know the resources offered at Lake Land College and use them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.” Advice from Lisa.
Thank you, Lisa, for your many years of service and for the positive impact you’ve made on so many lives!
