When coming to Lake Land College (LLC), seeing all the different types of student groups can be confusing. The Student Government Association (SGA) is no different from the rest. Sure, one may see them mentioned on LLC’s social media or on flyers, but what are they really?
SGA is made up of 17 members, eight freshmen and nine sophomores attending LLC. Each of these members helps to make sure the voices of students can be heard in college-related matters, participate in community service and overall help the college be helpful and safe for everyone. An example of some of these would be helping to advocate for funding of programs at LLC, setting up events such as blood drives and many more.
To join SGA, one will need to first apply during the consecutive application periods and then be voted in by other students from LLC. One-way applicants can help themselves become more known to the student body is by campaigning or just simply helping throughout the campus. This can be done by participating in Student Life activities, such as clubs, The Navigator, joining athletic teams and much more. Often, people who apply for SGA will print flyers and place them around the campus in places students usually sit or are seen. Overall, getting to know other students and participating in activities other than your classes can help get your name out there, whether it is for applying for something or just to make friends.
It is very important for colleges to have a voice of reason from the students themselves, and it can be difficult to properly manage that if there is not an available resource that can pull together many different students. If that is not made sure, colleges cannot properly articulate what the people want, and what current issues are that are not being seen by the faculty.
To stay updated on future events or giveaways, follow SGA on Facebook @Lake Land College Student Government Association or on Instagram @sga_lakelandcollege. Additionally, if you are interested in attending any of the SGA meetings that are open to the public, they are held in the Student Life office, in the Luther Student Center room 405, every Wednesday at 11 a.m.! If you have any questions or are interested in the open delegate position, email [email protected].
