If you find yourself stressing about finals, know that you are not alone. In fact, studies show that approximately 45 percent of college students experience quite an increase in stress when it comes to finals week. Although this point of the semester can feel very chaotic and overwhelming, there are some steps you can take to make the experience smoother and less stressful leading up to and during college finals. Here are a couple of tips you can try:
TIP 1: Start early! Almost nothing can hurt your academic performance more than cramming in your studying at the last minute, especially in the last couple of days before finals. Therefore, it is important to start your studying well before finals week. Not only does this allow your brain enough time to digest and recall the information you are reviewing, but it is also beneficial for your mental health and enables you to better balance all of the tasks you need to complete during this busy time.
TIP 2: Create a study schedule! Developing a study schedule can help you identify what you need to study and allocate the appropriate amount of time for each subject. Setting aside some time each day to actively recall and review your study material can significantly increase your retention abilities. If you would like further assistance in creating a study schedule or help with studying in general, consider visiting Lake Land’s Tutoring and Testing Center in Webb Hall 130.
TIP 3: Limit distractions! Although social media, Netflix and video games can be enjoyable, it is probably best to minimize these distractions leading up to finals. By limiting possible distractions, you lower the risk of procrastination and allow you to make better use of your time. One way you can reduce these distractions is to create a proper studying environment where these distractions are not present. Establishing a distraction-free study space can enhance your focus and the quality of your study time.
TIP 4: Take care of yourself! Taking care of yourself, physically and mentally, before and during finals week is crucial for success. To ensure optimal cognitive function, be sure to take care of your body and mind during this time. Some ways you can do so is by drinking plenty of water, eating balanced meals at least three times a day, getting enough sleep, and taking part in a relaxing activity or hobby you enjoy, such as taking a walk outdoors, journaling, listening to music, or reading.
TIP 5: Surround yourself with supportive people! During this stressful period, surrounding yourself with supportive and caring individuals can significantly improve your mental health. Spending time with friends, family, or a trusted mental health professional can help you relieve stress and give you the opportunity to talk through your struggles. Creating a study group is also an excellent way you can spend time around others and get some studying in as well. Lake Land also offers several options for mental health support resources.
