From the accidental flash on live T.V. to the non-stop crashing of Netflix’s platform, what else could one expect from the long-awaited fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul? If your answer were that people would be satisfied with the fight itself, you would be very wrong.
From before the event even started, fans expected Tyson to be harsh. Looking back at his boxing career, that is not surprising. Tyson was famous for his fighting skills, as well as knocking many of his opponents out. In one of his fights, he even bit off part of his opponent’s ear. What made people really believe that Tyson would go all out is while at the official weigh-in of the two fighters, Tyson slapped Paul in the face because Paul reportedly stepped on his toe.
When the eight rounds finally started, it became clear that Tyson would not be as powerful as he used to be. Many viewers claimed Paul looked scared of Tyson during the first two rounds. However, by the time the third round started, viewers began to lose hope for Tyson. It became clear to viewers that Tyson was getting worn out. Even though his age was clearly catching up with him, some people kept persisting that he would win. Throughout all eight of the rounds, neither Paul nor Tyson damaged their opponent too much, which led viewers to be confused and bored.
After Paul was announced as the winner of the eight total rounds, many people on social media shared their frustrations with not only the fight, but Paul himself. First, viewers were ranting about how boring the fight was, then their irritation turned into making jokes and memes about the entire event. There were countless posts on Twitter joking about Paul’s choices of opponents being much older than him. One such post states, “Jake Paul will fight Jimmy Carter next.” Tyson was also included in the jokes, as many people were joking about either his age or about the accidental flashing of his butt on live T.V., and how he should have bitten Paul’s ear off.
Although most viewers did not enjoy their fight, there was one fight in particular viewers seemed to enjoy. That is, the championship fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano. Among people’s ratings of all four fights of this night, most ratings had the women’s fight at the top. Overall, their fight was the most energetic, brutal, and entertaining. Viewers unfamiliar with the brutality of boxing sure were exposed to it, as Serrano’s eyebrow split open and continued to bleed all over the ring. However, as the fight continued, Taylor continued to repeatedly aim for Serrano’s injury, leading it to get worse. Although viewers were still not happy about Taylor winning, she was ultimately suspended from boxing for 30 days due to her foul play.
Although many viewers were hopeful that the infamous Mike Tyson would win this fight, it is important to remember two things. One, he is 58 years old. Realistically, most people are not going to be able to beat a 27-year-old once they reach that age. Secondly, Tyson had not been in an official boxing match in 19 years. Overall, both competitors earned a large amount of money for this fight, which is likely to make it a success for them.
