The Student Activity Board (SAB) at Lake Land College is an important organization dedicated to planning and coordinating events that enrich student life and foster a sense of community on campus. By organizing a wide range of activities, SAB helps students engage with one another while also providing opportunities for personal and leadership development. According to Mulowa Musonda, an SAB member, “The board’s primary goal is to create a fun and inclusive environment where all students feel welcome and have the chance to participate in campus life, all while balancing the demands of their academic responsibilities.”
SAB organizes various types of events that cater to different interests and needs on campus. These range from interactive experiences and cultural celebrations to service-based activities and creative arts events. Mulowa emphasized that the board aims to plan activities that resonate with as many students as possible. For example, recent successful events included the Airbrushing Event, Build-A-Bear Event, Rock Painting and Air Plants & The Treats, all of which were highly with the student body. Additionally, the SAB hosts academic support events such as the tutoring & Testing Event, which offer resources to help students excel in their studies.
When asked how SAB ensures that its events appeal to a diverse group of students, she explained that the board actively seeks input from members of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The board meets regularly to discuss event suggestions and ensure that each event reflects the interests and needs of the entire student body. This inclusivity is at the heart of SAB’s mission to create a campus environment where every student feels represented.
Planning and organizing events do come with its challenges, as Mulowa noted. One of the biggest hurdles the SAB faces is gathering accurate feedback on what students want to see from the board. Knowing how many students will attend an event, what supplies will be needed and how to manage the event budget can be tricky. The feedback from the student body is essential to the SAB’s success but coordinating schedules and balancing budgets are ongoing challenges. Mulowa pointed out that what worked five years ago in terms of event budgets may no longer be feasible today due to rising costs.
Despite these challenges, the SAB remains committed to its goal of enhancing student life. Their efforts also extend beyond event planning. The SAB collaborates with other student organizations and campus departments, further enriching the experience for students. This semester, the board is excited to host several upcoming events, including the Advertisement Event/Free Pizza gathering and the highly anticipated Intramurals and Club Treat Event.
Mulowa emphasized that the SAB’s work has a significant impact on the overall student experience. By helping students connect, the board not only improves students’ happiness but also builds a stronger sense of community at Lake Land College. These events help foster friendships, provide students with fun and meaningful experiences, and ensure that everyone can find their place on campus.
