To help encourage Lake Land College students to vote for the Student Government Association (SGA) freshman delegate, SGA partnered up with the Student Activity Board (SAB) with their very own “build-a-bear” event! Along with getting their bag of popcorn, students were able to get a cute and cuddly friend. Alongside the bright and colorful supply of plushies were multiple laptops where students got the chance to vote for a freshman delegate.
There were many different plush options for the students to choose from. Such examples were tigers, green aliens, bears, elephants and rainbow dogs. To help personalize their cuddly friend, students were able to get additional accessories for their plush such as a little heart or a Lake Land themed shirt. To help get the ‘true’ build-a-bear experience, packets of stuffing were handed out for students to personally stuff them and were able to get a birth certificate as a remembrance for their new friend.
The build-a-bear event was very popular, with a lengthy line of students going all the way across the cafeteria! There were dozens of students sitting together and having a bonding experience through stuffed animals. New friends were made, whether they were with humans or stuffed animals.
After the long day of stuffing plushies and eating popcorn, the freshman delegate results were announced on Fri., Sept. 13. The chosen eight delegates are Abigail Warman, Addison Urbanski, Ellie Thoele, Emma Deters, Jasmine Gast, Jay Bliler, Morgan Knoblett and Rylee Robb. Congratulations to all the new delegates!
One of the volunteers for the event, Hayley Haskett, was able to give some insight into this event as well as how much it helped get people to vote. Haskett works in Student Life as the Administrative Assistant and helps with many of the SAB events. She said, “The build-a-bear event idea was given to us by one of the entertainment companies we frequently use, called F.U.N. Enterprises.” She also believes this event helped bring attention to and get more people to vote for the freshman delegate. “Who doesn’t love free stuff?” she remarked. According to Haskett, there were over 150 students who voted in the election.
“I would encourage any student who has free time between classes to attend our events because they are great opportunities to meet new friends, learn something, get creative, or just enjoy something free that they can take home!” Haskett said.
Be sure to come and attend other SAB events, you will have fun! Events are on every Wed. from 11-1 p.m. and include many diverse types of events, such as this one.
