In the disorder that has ensued following President Joe Biden’s step-down from the 2024 election, much has been left unremarked. Vice President Kamala Harris precedes his administration with an utterly different mindset; similarly, Donald Trump approaches a second term with old ideologies freshly sculpted to fit his four-year departure from the White House. Both vice and ex-president came together on Tuesday, September 10th to extend their theories for a better America. With the election less than two months away, the importance of this debate fuels Washington’s administration as a leading power in today’s society.
In an abridged version of the order of the debate, the moderators David Muir and Lindsey Davis bring to Harris and Trump’s attention the long-standing problems of economics, abortion, environment (including fracking and oil reserves within the states), and foreign policy. All of these are very relevant problems that American citizens face every day. One major difference between the debaters’ approach to their supposed future jurisdiction was their fixations on the past and the future. Donald Trump most notably got caught in the repetitive nature of repeating old arguments on events and philosophies that are outdated, instead of finding direct solutions to the processes following Biden’s term. Similarly, Kamala’s main concern in this election is differentiating herself from the former president’s administration. Harris makes this discernment in the debate by answering the questions posed to her with a focus on the future outside of her current connection to Joe Biden. These inquiries include those the vice-president backed in the 2020 primary, which she now clarifies her changed views on fracking and health insurance.
