If you enjoyed Lisa Shumard-Shelton’s previous book, “High Fives for Laker Louie,” then you are in luck as she just released a second edition to the Laker Louie series! This time, Louie will be trying out the many different sports available at Lake Land College in the new book “Cheers for Laker Louie.” Different sports in this story include basketball, volleyball, baseball and many more. Even if Louie struggles to play certain sports because he is a duck, he still tries his best and has fun.
Illustrated by Brett Sawyer, this new book brings great visuals in the form of a picture book. There are many different visuals that help to bring a better understanding to Louie’s struggles in playing sports. For instance, while having wings helped him to play volleyball, his beak unfortunately got in the way. Both Laker Louie books were illustrated by Sawyer, who also makes comics for The Navigator News.
Shumard-Shelton was inspired by her two children when writing this book. She said, “I spent years reading to them and observing what they liked and didn’t like about books. I also noticed how inspired they become when a book really excited them.” She was also inspired by Lake Land College overall. As stated, “It is a special place and deserves to be featured!”
She also stated, “I would be remiss to not thank the MANY people who help make this book possible, this is not something that I could do alone or without help. Lake Land College has supported this effort 100% and for that, I am grateful!” She also had some advice for future writers. “Just keep writing and trying new things! All writing is good in the sense that you learn and grow from it! I learned so many things from the publication of my first Louie book,” she said.
Shumard-Shelton plans to have a third book to the Laker Louie series within the next two years. Currently, the newest book in the series is available online as well at the Laker Nest bookstore for $5. Be sure to come to the bookstore in the Luther Student Center to show support for her new book!
