Kaylee Blackford, the Student Government Association (SGA) President at Lake Land College, began her journey with the SGA after a friend encouraged her to get involved. Having been active in organizations throughout high school, Kaylee was eager to continue her leadership experiences in college. Since then, she has embraced her role and become a dedicated leader within the campus community.
Kaylee’s initial interest in the SGA stemmed from her desire to stay involved in student organizations. “I was very active in organizations throughout high school and wanted to do the same in college,” she said. Joining the SGA not only gave her the chance to continue her passion for leadership but also allowed her to build lasting relationships with both students and faculty. Since joining, Kaylee has enjoyed the sense of community and support she has found. “I have been fortunate to meet wonderful people across campus, and I know I have a strong support system behind me,” she reflected. She firmly believes that the SGA helps bridge the gap between students and faculty, fostering solid connections and providing students with valuable networking opportunities.
One of Kaylee’s most rewarding experiences as part of the SGA has been helping to organize the High School Leadership Conference and volunteering at the Special Olympics Family Festival. These events allowed her to engage with the broader community and contribute to meaningful causes. Additionally, she is enthusiastic about working with the new first-year students who have joined the SGA, helping them settle into their roles and experience the same positive impact the SGA has had on her.
As Kaylee looks to the future, she is excited about several projects the SGA has in store for the upcoming year. One highlight is the continuation of the High School Leadership Conference, where the SGA will guide high school students through leadership workshops. Another major event is Advocacy Day in Springfield, where she and her team will represent the college and advocate for state legislators on behalf of their peers.
In addition to her leadership role at the SGA, Kaylee is pursuing a degree in animal sciences. Growing up on a cattle farm sparked her passion for animals, and she enjoys working with them, baking and reading in her free time.
Her advice to students considering involvement in the SGA or student leadership is: “You never know what you are capable of until you give it a shot.”
Kaylee’s leadership in the SGA demonstrates her commitment to serving the campus community and creating opportunities for her fellow students. Her story is a reminder of the positive impact student involvement can have on the college experience.
