Lake Land College (LLC) is home to many helpful resources and services that are truly dedicated to making students’ lives easier. One of the services that is beneficial but not as well-known is the Lake Land College Food Pantry! The LLC Food Pantry, in the back hallway on the left side of the Laker Nest Bookstore, is a great resource the college offers its students.
The LLC Food Pantry has plenty of options accessible for students, including food, clothing, and home goods. The only criterion that makes you eligible for using the LLC Food Pantry is being a student at Lake Land College. There is no need to worry about meeting certain financial criteria or filling out any paperwork to have access to the pantry.
Wally Rubin is a Student Wellness Specialist at Lake Land who helps students get connected with the resources and help that they need. Since she helps oversee the LLC Food Pantry, Rubin was eager to speak about why students should utilize it. Rubin mentions that “A lot of people don’t think of a food pantry, even if they are in need. They think, ‘Well, I have food. I don’t need to, you know, take charity’, but they need to realize that this is a resource here to make their life easier.” She adds that the recently changing economy has been difficult for students to navigate, especially for international students. Therefore, making sure that students know about the food pantry is important. Rubin also emphasizes the importance of making the pantry as user-friendly as possible.
Rubin shares that the LLC Food Pantry receives deliveries and support from a local food bank, as well as a local church. The pantry appreciates donations and the food drives that often take place on campus also help support the cause. Rubin also made sure to express her gratitude for the student workers at Lake Land that help keep the food pantry up and running. “Now we have students that man our food pantry. This is another way to try to make people feel comfortable; it is their peers that man it,” she states.
When asked about her position at the college and helping run the pantry, Rubin reveals, “I have just been so thrilled that I got this job because I get to work with students and the staff here at Lake Land, which I have to say, are rather unique in how student-orientated they are, and it is just lovely to work here.”
The LLC Food Pantry is accessible from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please note that if the college is closed, the pantry will be as well. Rubin also encourages students to, if possible, bring their own bags or boxes when visiting the pantry.
