“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is a sequel to the first “Beetlejuice” move originally released in 1988. The new movie takes place in the modern era and we see a continuation of the original characters’ lives as well as many new faces.
Lydia Deetz is all grown up and hosting TV show where she goes in haunted houses and speaks with ghosts. However, while on stage speaking with the couple who own the haunted house Deetz sees a flash of you know who. She is upset and runs off stage into the bathroom shakily trying to take a pill. However, she is interrupted by a new character her boyfriend Rory. Who in my opinion is supposed to remind us of Otho from the 1988 film.
We soon find out the Deetz has a daughter named Astrid who goes to a boarding school, which happens to be funded by Delia Deetz’s art. Astrid seems to be a troubled kid who does not fit in. She is very passionate about saving the environment thanks to her dad, who we learned passed away when she was little.
Eventually all three Deetz’s are together again as they learn that Charles Deetz has been eaten by a shark. Throughout the film we see Charles walking around without his head and gory blood spewing from his spine. This was more than likely Charles fate due to the fact that the actor who portrayed him is a pedophile and registered sex-offender.
A new character that does not add much to the plot but the internet loves is Delores, played by Monica Bellucci. In a steamy scene we see her staple herself back together and then suck the soul out of a janitor, played by Danny DeVito. We soon find out that she is Beetlejuice’s wife and is on the hunt for him.
Throughout the film Delores is portrayed as the real villain, as well as Rory, who does not have Lydia’s best interests in mind. We do not meet the villain until towards the end of the comedic film in a crazy twist of events.
Overall, I enjoyed this movie as a Beetlejuice fan, however I can see why many fans were left disappointed at all the different plot lines going on. I also was left curious about things that were mentioned but never elaborated on, like what loophole let the Maitland’s pass over. I also was sad to see Bob go. #justiceforbob
