“The waters getting colder, let me in your ocean swim. Out in California, I’ll be forward stroking, swim…” is the most replayed part of “Swim” by Chase Atlantic. The song has over 320 million plays on YouTube Music and over 767 million plays on Spotify; to mention only a few streaming sites. But to real fans of the band, there is more to their songs than “Swim,” “Friends” and “Into it”.
Chase Atlantic is an Australian band and production trio from Cairns, Queensland in Australia. They are a group of two brothers, Mitchel Cave and Clinton Cave, and a lifelong friend they have known since their teenage years, Christian Anthony. Their music blends various genres, including alternative rock, pop, R&B and hip-hop, creating a unique and eclectic sound.
Chase’s self-titled debut album features songs from their Part one, two and three extended plays (EP), which was released to build anticipation for the album’s release. Part one was released in January 2017, part two in March 2017 and part three in September of the same year. The album itself was released the following month, October. The album consists of 14 songs, one of which their most popular songs are “Swim,” “Into it” and “Consume (feat. Goon Des Garcons),” but there is more to the album than just those top three songs.
They told Border Crossing about the album saying, “A lot of the songs are about our lives, just kind of exaggerated in a way. It’s a big change moving from Australia to LA. We get to tell our own stories”. Listening to the songs, whether for the melody or the lyrics or for both, one can always interpret the lyrics in your own way.
“Into it” addresses both the good and bad that comes with success. “Cassie” the second track on their part two EP, is confirmed by Chase themselves that the song was inspired by Cassie Ainsworth, a fictional character in the television series “Skins.” “The walls” is about some sort of party, where everyone is abusing heavy drugs and leaning on the walls.
As a huge fan, one whose all-time favorite song is “Now” which is an unreleased song and knows the full lyrics to it. Talking about each of the 14 songs on a deeper level would take up the whole newspaper but my top three from this album would be “Dancer in the dark,” “Triggered” and “Uncomfortable” in that order.
They are currently back from a hiatus and are having concerts from Oct. 16 to Dec. 20 in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia with a total of 29 concerts in various locations. If you are on the lookout for songs to add to your playlist to match any vibe or mood, you should check them out.
