Kim Hunter has been a part of Lake Land College for about six years. She started as an Intensive English Language Instructor, primarily working with international and non-native English-speaking students. When the position of International Coordinator became available, Kim applied and was selected. After serving in that role for about two and a half years, she transitioned to her current position as the Director of Student Success Services, overseeing a wide range of areas including testing, tutoring, international studies, and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) program.
In her role, Kim manages a diverse array of services that support student success. This includes overseeing proctoring services for online and math classes, administering placement tests, and providing tutoring in specific subjects like accounting or computer software. Additionally, her department helps students with broader skills such as time management, using Canvas, practicing speeches, and correctly citing sources in papers.
Kim’s department also supports students with accommodations, ensuring they have access to private rooms, extended time, or test readers as needed. The International Studies and DEIB programs are also under her leadership, with both the International Coordinator and DEIB Coordinator reporting directly to her.
Kim’s passion lies in helping students become their best selves. She enjoys the one-on-one mentoring and tutoring aspects of her job, which allow her to provide personalized support to students. Her department focuses on offering a “handholding” approach, providing individualized assistance to students as they transition into college life.
In addition to in-person services, Kim’s department offers several lesser-known resources. These include a school supply pantry, a lending library of testing materials, Zoom tutoring, and a variety of resources available on the department’s Canvas page, such as tutorials and citation cheat sheets.
Though Kim continues to teach English courses at Lake Land College, her true passion is in the mentoring and support work she does through Student Success Services. Her background in English literature and teaching composition and professional writing has greatly influenced her approach to student support, combining classroom teaching with the more personalized, outside-the-classroom assistance that she finds most fulfilling.
Kim will be traveling to South Africa and Ethiopia soon, though she will remain accessible via email during her trip.
