Max Verstappen, a name synonymous with Formula One (F1) racing, has become a familiar sound to those who follow the sport. The Dutch national anthem, a regular feature at F1 events, is a testament to his prowess. A three-time World Champion, Verstappen is currently poised to defend his title in the upcoming 2024 season.
Verstappen has been a fierce competitor even in his karting days. This is partially thanks to his father never letting failure be an option. Mostly, it is due to Verstappen’s driving style and competitiveness. In fact, Verstappen was so good in Formula 3, the lower level of Formula racing, that Red Bull fast-tracked him into F1 by the age of 17. At the time, Verstappen did not even have a regular driver’s license, and the next year, an age requirement was set by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
For the last three years, Verstappen has continuously been at the top, winning 48 out of the 67 Grand Prix he has participated in. His unique driving style, which mimics Micheal Schumacher, is possibly the reason why. Verstappen likes the car to have more oversteer. He likes a good loose end. This gives him a pointier front, hurtling him into the corners quicker and more precisely. This is a more difficult driving style, and many of his competitors cannot achieve it. His own teammate, Sergio Pérez, struggles with the driving style.
Verstappen has unwavering consistency, and every race he has not won has not been his fault. A technical error, an engine failure, or his brakes catching on fire seem to be the only thing that can stop Verstappen in Formula One. In the 2024 season, Verstappen has continued conquering the world of F1 in what can only be known as the “Verstappen Era.” It will be interesting to see if Verstappen can continue his reign of speed or if another driver will soon take his throne.
