The Broadcast Communications Department has hosted the Broadcast Open House at the Northwest Building on campus on Friday, March 22 from 12-2 p.m. The Broadcast Open House is in conjunction with Laker Visit Day, which is geared toward local high school students coming to Lake Land’s main campus in Mattoon.
For the Laker Visit Day, the high school students are accompanied on campus by the teachers, administrators and staff as well as their parents. Moreover, anyone in the general public within the community can also come to campus for Laker Visit Day in order to see what the campus has to offer in many different departments.
According to Greg Powers, who is the Director of the Broadcast Communications Department, as well as the Manager of WLKL, Lake Land’s student run radio station since 2006, “The Broadcast Open House is held every year during the spring semester. We try to piggy back it with a Laker Visit Day. Excluding the COVID-19 years, this is our fourth year hosting the event.”
Powers explained, “There is not necessarily a theme for the open house. This event will give an opportunity for potential students an idea of what we (Broadcasting Dept.) do here. We give them hands-on experience, let them (high school students) get their feet wet, whether it’s on the radio, behind the camera, just to let people know what opportunities are available here on campus and at the department.”
He mentioned, “When the people come here for the Open House, we will have a mock newscast for them to anchor, have fun with the green screen, let them go on the radio, voice some announcements and other different things which they can get some experience in the industry.”
He stated, “Next year, when we (WLKL-FM radio station) are hosting our 50th anniversary being on-air on campus, we will come up with something special.”
