The Learning Resource Center (LRC), known as the library on campus, hosted the Library Book Sale from March 11-15, the week after the campus was on Spring Break. It was held every day that week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sarah Hill, the current director of library services at the Learning Resource Center (LRC) on campus, spearheaded the Library Book Sale. She mentioned, “It is the second consecutive year having the Library Book Sale,” after not having the event in previous years.
In regards to the book sale, Hill explained, “Everything being sold was fifty cents. It did not matter if it was an audiobook, CD, DVD, paperback or hardback books. It was to make things easier. The library is weeding out the audiobooks, CDs, DVDs since people are now using our streaming apps. Many libraries are phasing out these items because of this reason.”
“In addition to items from the library that are considered outdated to be part of the sale, only the library staff could bring items to the book sale. This is done to avoid having stacks to the ceiling.”
Hill stated, “On our website, we (LRC) have a Collection Development policy regarding the age of certain subjects relating to the book sale. Certain subject areas get discarded earlier than others. For example, in nursing, the Nursing Department on campus prefers all the books in the library pertaining to the subject to be published within the past five years.”
“Our Nursing selection is smaller and we tend to run through these items quicker compared to other selections. For fiction on the other hand, we look at a couple things such as whether or not we have the book in circulation here. Another subject that goes faster is Technology.”
In comparison to last year’s staff, Hill confirmed that, “This year the library made $238 and last year, the library made $234.50. Last year, we sold some items for a quarter and this year, we sold the items for fifty cents. Fiction books are the most popular item in book sales overall and we did not have many of them to sell, so it is hard to compare us to other public libraries.”
