Sophia Wagner is the Public Information Officer for Lake Land College’s Student Government Association (SGA) for 2023-2024. She is from Onarga, Illinois and is a sophomore here at Lake Land College. Wagner is doing a double associate’s degree in agriculture and horticulture. She will graduate in May and has just accepted a position in landscape design.
Outside of school, Wagner enjoys helping on her family farm, explicitly raising cattle. She did 4-H and showed the cattle she raised. Her dad has a construction company and would help her with her woodworking 4-H projects. She also enjoys cooking and gardening with her family.
Since she is in school, Wagner cannot help on her family farm. Instead, she enjoys “anything, old lady.” She specifically mentioned crocheting, embroidering, and hand sewing. For her last birthday, Wagner mentioned she got a new sewing machine and loves working with it. She also considers herself to be a grandma at heart. “I would rather be a grandma than anything else,” Wagner says as she laughs, mentioning her friends poking fun at her grandma-like hobbies.
At first, Wagner was not interested in the SGA, associating it with politics. After talking with a few SGA members, Wagner realized she would like to be involved. “The SGA is not politics. It is representing the college and students,” added Wagner. She enjoys being involved and is naturally a people person and is always willing to help.
Wagner refers to her job on the SGA as a public relations and marketing. She creates flyers, posters, and other materials for the SGA and helps communicate with students. Wagner said she was drawn to this position because she enjoys making graphics and its involvement with student life.
Something Wagner would like to bring attention to is the nationwide blood shortage. “Every donation counts.” Although the blood drive at Lake Land College has just passed, there are always upcoming ones. To find a Red Cross blood drive near you or for more information, visit redcross.org.
