All I want for Christmas is for another iconic Christmas song to appear to give poor Mariah Carey a break. Whenever Nov. rolls around, Carey breaks free from her icicle cage with her candy cane pickaxe and begins her round of being the top artist of the month.
With the release in 1994 of Carey’s Christmas album titled “Merry Christmas,” success was inevitable forthcoming her career. Particularly the track “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which I’m sure everyone is familiar with now. Today, the song is inescapable, even before Thanksgiving. With the snippet of the jingle bells in the beginning, we know the end is near.
In all seriousness, big corporations like Walmart and Target blast this song on a loop about every other few songs, and boy, do I feel sorry for the retail workers working long shifts this holiday season. The song is indeed catchy and iconic, but with every song comes the point where it becomes so overplayed that it’s exhausting. Carey plays into the meme her song has evolved into over the past few years, but I’m sure it’s irksome at times.
Carey has an entire discography other than her Christmas tracks as well. The tracks “Fantasy” and “It’s a Wrap” may ring a bell due to their once-again popularity on TikTok. Midwest-born female rapper Latto samples the instrumental in her hit “Big Energy,” and even features Carey herself on the DJ Khaled remix of the song. 2008 came and Carey released “E=MC^2” which featured the lead single “Touch My Body.” A trend arose on TikTok at the beginning of this year featuring Carey’s single “It’s A Wrap” from her 2009 album “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.”
By no means am I a hater of the song, it just begins to turn exhausting after being overplayed. There are other classic Christmas pop songs to enjoy this holiday season, like “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber and “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande, two of my personal favorites.
Let’s begin his jolly season by giving Mariah Carey a break from being on repeat.
