The MTV Video Music Awards took place on Sept. 12, at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. The host for the event was Nicki Minaj, making it the artist’s second time hosting the event. There were a lot of big-name musicians and celebrities, such as Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Shakira, and others at this event.
There were many highlights on the show, such as Taylor Swift snagging 9 out of the 11 awards she was nominated for, such as Artist of the Year, Video of the Year, and Song of the Year with her song “Anti-Hero,” Album of the Year with her album “Midnight.” Shakira performed a medley of her hit songs, and won the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award, making her the first South American artist to win the award, showing off the artist’s influence in the world of pop. Additionally, Diddy won the Global Icon Award, and Ice Spice won the Best New Artist award.
There were also other amazing performances, such as Doja Cat performing her songs “Attention,” “Paint the Town Red” and “Demons.” Diddy performed a medley of seven songs, with young Miami and Keyshia Cole as special guests. Olivia Rodrigo performed songs from her latest album “GUTS,” and caused a little fright with the audience when she switched to start her next song. Also, a memorable collaboration between Cardi B and Megan thee Stallion with their song “Bongos.”
To close the show, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Grandmaster Flash, and various others performed a hip-hop tribute medley for hip hop’s 50th anniversary.
