On Nov. 30, the Mattoon Public Library will be hosting its annual open house fundraiser beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at 7 p.m.. Tickets are 30 dollars and can be purchased in advance by calling 217-234-1720 or visiting the front desk at the library. The funds collected at this event will be used to fund extra programs and events throughout the year. Programs offered by the Mattoon Public Library, such as weekly homeschooling, weekly storytelling, book clubs, and summer reading activities are made possible through fundraisers and the support of the community.
Not only is this event to raise money for such activities but it is also meant to involve the community and encourage more regular and frequent use of the library. Beth Pugh, Deputy Director of the Mattoon Public Library, said that “it’s meant to be a fun night to mingle with others and enjoy the evening.” There will be food from local restaurants provided, as well as wine and soft drinks. Though there will be alcohol available, this is an all-ages event and everyone is encouraged to attend.
Many feel that today libraries are often underappreciated or overlooked as a public resource and place to connect. “Many people don’t utilize the library as a resource,” Pugh said. The goal of the fundraiser is to attract new people and work towards creating a space that will thrive. The library hopes to see not only its regular visitors but plenty of new faces as well. All are encouraged to attend the event and make use of the library as often as possible.
