There is yet again another variant of the coronavirus, and has been spotted in 11 countries including the United States. This variation BA.2.86 also known as Pirola, has caused a lot of people to get worried and anxious over it, wondering what is going to happen next, especially with the rising cases of COVID-19 here in the states.
Viruses mutate all the time, especially because they reproduce while they are in the body of the host, replacing the original one that was there at the start, which can be seen in diseases such as the flu. What makes this variant stand out is the fact that it can easily pass through the immune system of those who already have the COVID-19 vaccines.
“There are very few occurrences of this variant among the cases of COVID-19 here in the states, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are looking into it and watching out for variants,” said Christina Maye, the campus nurse here at Lake Land College (LLC). “The most common variant seen in the cases of COVID-19 here in the states is the EG.5” she also says. This also known as the Eris virus, a descendant of the Omicron virus, which is another variant of COVID-19, which had a dominant hand in the cases during the fall of 2022.
“People should be aware that [Covid] is still here, but the good news is that we do have a greater immunity still here from the previous infections,” Christina comments, as a lot of people are still not aware of the rise in the covid cases and its variants. She reiterates that even if our bodies can handle it after a series of vaccines, we still have to be careful especially since a lot of variants keep popping out every few months since viruses evolve and mutate.
