The Tutoring and Testing Center at Lake Land College (LLC) was established in Aug. 1990 by Karla Miller, who was a part-time employee at the time. The Tutoring Center back then, as it is now, is located in Webb Hall Room 130.

The services at the Tutoring and Testing Services are free for all LLC students and can be used to improve academic performances, lessen stress and teach students how to study along with having the option of having study partners. Miller is no longer the Director of the Tutoring and Testing Center as Kim Hunter replaced Miller in January 2022. However, Miller still serves as Hunter’s mentor as well as tutors students in Math.

Hunter mentioned that prior to becoming the director of the Tutoring and Testing Center, her experiences entailed “having a background in teaching prior to coming here (Lake Land College) and having a master’s in english. While I was working on my Doctorate Program at Purdue University, I taught composition, business writing, professional writing, technical writing, writing for health and human services, and speech communications at Ivy Tech Community College. I was an instructor for coming here (Lake Land College). In addition to that, I worked as both a tutor and as an instructor for the English Proficiency Program. When I came here, I was an instructor for the English Language Program prior to moving to my previous position as an International Student Coordinator.”

Hunter stated that “my predecessor, Karla Miller was great for her job and did so much for the college. After she retired in Dec. 2021, she left some pretty big shoes to fill. Around the time she retired, I knew that we would have to move into a digital landscape. Much of it has been done in-house. We (Tutoring and Testing Center) have provided services digitally which some are attributed to COVID-19 as well as offering programs in a digital format. We have a Canvas webpage with some resources. Students who signed up and received services, signed in and out electronically and we also offer Zoom services. Moving into the digital age has been a big thing for us. The tutors here helped with creating the sign-in, sign-out log, created the videos for the Tutoring Center as well as set up Zoom appointments to meet with students who need assistance.”

Hunter explained that the most common areas students come to the Tutoring and Testing Center is, “math, mainly algebra, followed by writing and speech composition. Business and IT (Information Technology) are other common areas that students need tutoring in. We have tutors that specialized in Practical Software and Accounting. Additionally, we have a handful of students at the Tutoring Center for Spanish.”

Hunter clarified along with tutoring, “The Tutoring and Testing Center offer services such as the school supply pantry. The students can ask for supplies to get started. The students also come here to receive testing accommodations, such as taking the test outside the classroom or receiving extended time. Students can come by to work on assignments or study for exams and tests and can ask for assistance without any direct tutoring. The students can come to the Testing Center to receive proctoring for specialized exams and placement tests. We do John Deere testing, various nursing and medical testing, along with testing in reading, math and english. We also do certification tests such as GED, General Education Diploma, for people who did not complete high school.”

Hunter wants everyone to know that the Tutoring and Testing Center “ is a very welcoming environment. Even if you don’t need a lot of tutoring, it is a place anyone can stop by to get questions answered, get necessary resources, or get a little bit of help and not become committed to receiving consistent services. We do walk-in tutoring as well. Finally, there is a math tutor that meets at the West Building from Monday thru Thursday.”
