Mattoon Lightworks bringing holiday cheer amidst the end of a difficult year

Madelyn Kidd, Editor-in-Chief

For many families in the intermediate Mattoon area, going to see the Mattoon Lightworks at least once, if not multiple times, every holiday season is tradition. However with a year like 2020, many holiday traditions are unavailable or have been modified for this season. Thankfully, the Mattoon Lightworks was already a pandemic world safe activity, so nearby families can provide at least one normal experience for the upcoming holidays.

Mattoon Lightworks is a drive-thru decor light show located at Peterson Park in Mattoon, Ill. They also usually have a couple walk-thru dates. However, with recent restrictions from the Governor, they had one walk-thru event the last night before the restrictions were applied.

The Mattoon Lightworks opened on Nov. 20 and will be closing after the holiday season on Dec. 27. Mattoon Lightworks has a free admission, but with accepted donations. They are open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and are open from 5 p.m. through 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Additionally, local churches will host a live nativity each Friday in December.

Mattoon Lightworks is advertised as, “Ring in the holidays at Peterson Park with a spectacular display of holiday lights to welcome the season. Drive through Mattoon’s beautiful Peterson Park to see a vast array of standard and animated holiday light displays. Over 15,000 visitors each year see this great display of holiday lights vividly reflecting off the winter’s snow.”

With COVID-19 preventing many holiday traditions, it’s wonderful to have a local holiday tradition, such as the Mattoon Lightworks, still take place.
