Should TikTok be banned in America?

Several weeks ago, President Trump announced that he was considering banning TikTok, an app for sharing short videos, in America. It has been stated that the U.S. government believes that the Chinese company which owns TikTok could be collecting information about its American users and could be promoting propaganda and other specific content for China’s government. TikTok has claimed that this is not true, and the feud between the popular video-sharing platform and the Trump Administration continues to escalate.

However, should TikTok actually be banned in our country? Even though I myself do not currently have an account on TikTok, I personally do not think that it should be banned. Of course TikTok has its own positive and negative features, as do all other forms of social media and content sharing platforms. It is a creative outlet that has a large variety of content that can cater to a wide array of audiences, depending on their likes and interests. I’d like to think that there is a reason why TikTok is so popular. People love it as a source of entertainment and as an outlet for them to express themselves through creative videos. At this rate, TikTok has become so popular that it sits within the ranks of YouTube and Instagram, and if the government tried banning either one of those, I’m sure it would cause a massive uproar of angry Americans.

Does the government want to ban TikTok for genuine reasons of concern or just to spite China? Honestly, in this day and age, you never truly know. This app is extremely popular not only in America, but worldwide. Unless the government obtains solid evidence that China is using TikTok to gather information about Americans, the ban on TikTok would be for nothing. Just because TikTok is not owned by an American company like other major social platforms, it does not deserve to be banned throughout our entire country. If Americans want to download the app, create and account and look at new video content daily, then they should be able to as it is their choice.

TikTok is loved by a very large number of Americans, and if it were to go away, it would upset that vast group of TikTok users. It has become a new form of entertainment and as a place to create short videos to express individuality and share interests among others, as well as a good laugh once in a while. Unless solidified reasons are relieved showing how TikTok is invading our privacy and a genuine threat to the American people, it should not be banned.
