Disney+ has been out for two months now, and now that the hype of the much anticipated streaming service has died down, the time is now to see how Disney+ has affected the streaming wars. In the many months before Nov. 13, Disney+ was seen as the grand rival to finally dethrone Netflix as the best streaming service around. With the entire Disney Vault, every Disney Channel original movie, every Disney TV show, and a whole host of MCU and modern live action remakes, Disney+ was the perfect mix of modern entertainment and nostalgia all wrapped up in a nice little $6.99 a month package. Disney+ incurred well over 10 million subscribers its first day of launch and is projected to be well in the 100 millions number in a year or two. Disney+ brought with it original content to compete with Netflix’s original series, such as “Stranger Things” and “The Santa Clarita Diet,” with the long anticipated Star Wars series, “The Mandalorian.” Disney+ is not slowing down either, with many original shows slated for the next few years, including an Obi-Wan Kenobi series following his time after “The Revenge of the Sith,” bringing back Ewan McGregor from the early 2000s prequel series.
Despite many seeing Disney+ as a direct threat to Netlflix, that has not necessarily been the truth. Due to Disney+’s low price, it is seen as more likely people having both Netflix and Disney+ rather than a one over the other like many suspected. Despite Disney+ slating new shows and bringing back old shows, such as “Lizzie McGuire” revival featuring many of the original cast from the 2001 Disney series. Netflix has a more diverse library of movies and TV shows, that Disney+ cannot compete with due to majority family friendly content. With Netflix losing more and more of its content to the new competition streaming services run by networks, it is still anyone’s game.
