Every year there are certain events that will be remembered for decades. I truly believe that this year’s event could have been the legendary Area 51 raid. For those of you who do not know what I am talking about, there was a big Facebook movement that thousands of people flocked to where they were all going to rush the fences of Area 51. Now, as cool as that may seem, the plan is a terrible idea. Area 51 is private government land where the fences literally tell you that if anyone crosses it, they have the right to gun you down. That immediately raised red flags for me. Why would people want to test that? It is kinda funny, but around the time this event started was the same time I was taught about natural selection. This basically means that people who use more common sense are more likely to survive and that the people who do not use common sense are more likely to die. That’s ironic right? It made me think about how stupid it would be to cross that fence. Sure they would make history, but not in a good way. Anyone who participated would not even make it to the front door. I did some searching for myself on Facebook and actually found out that over 3 million people are interested in or going to the event. I know this was meant to be a joke, but I also know that a lot of people probably have taken this seriously. What happens when the joke goes too far?
If people do truly try to storm Area 51, then I think it will go down as one of the worst ideas in history. It is human nature to be curious but some things are better left unknown. We all have heard the saying “curiosity killed the cat,” well I personally cannot think of a better saying to put with this movement then that one. I do believe that a lot of people will be tuning in that day to see what will really go down, and I will even admit that I will be one of them. I truly hope I am wrong though. It would truly be a nice way to get people together, but if things are given the chance to go awry, then maybe it is time to call it quits. Overall, I can truly say my opinion on this is that while it is a very cool thought, going through with it is a very dumb idea.
