Socialism is an political and economic system in which goods and products are collectively distributed by the government. In this system, there is no “private property,” but rather everything is owned by the state.
This term came up in the recent election. Bernie Sanders has some socialist views, though he doesn’t declare himself a socialist because of its negative associations. Though some think of totalitarianism or communism when they head about socialism, Sanders argues that socialism is simply a better form of democracy. He argues for civil liberties and against authoritarianism.
Socialism’s roots are in the French Revolution of 1789, and it was popularized by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels’ Communist Manifesto in 1848.
Many countries, including Cuba, have made socialism work or have elements of socialism. In Cuba, health care and education are both covered by the government, and there is no stock market.
