‘The Giver’ is a gift

With the explosion of online streaming services’ popularity in recent years, viewers have been given access to an untold number of movies, some that we normally would not even think to watch and some that count down the seconds to their online releases. One rainy Saturday morning, while attempting to complete homework, I was out of good choices on Netflix and had been forced to resort to the “recommended for you” section.  I chose a movie with the belief that it was unwatchable and would be great background noise. That movie was ‘The Giver,’ and I have never been more wrong about anything in my life.
The film was based on a novel of the same name, written by Lois Lowry in 1993, which I am currently reading. It is the story of a boy who learns the secrets of his seemingly perfect world, and must decide how to react to the truth.
‘The Giver’ employs a cast that could appeal to all generations, including Alexander Skarsgård (Eric from “True Blood”), Jeff Bridges (“The Dude” in The Big Lebowski), Meryl Streep (the horrible editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada), and even has a few brief appearances by the one and only Taylor Swift.
Add the star-studded cast to the unique approach it takes to the old story of a hero having to choose between doing what is truly right and wrong in a dystopian society, and you have a great way to spend an hour and a half of your day.
I highly recommend checking ‘The Giver’ out on Netflix, or at the video store. You will not be disappointed at what beauty this movie will present to your eyes.
