Presidents Update

Providing the tools you need to be successful is very important to the faculty and staff at Lake Land College. That’s why today, I’d like to share some information with you about one of the most helpful and valuable resources available to you on campus.

As the semester progresses and finals are just around the corner, you might find yourself facing some challenging assignments or worrying about an upcoming test. You are not alone! Rest assured, help is available. Students just like you receive assistance every day at the Tutoring & Testing Center—and it’s free!

Tutors are available in a variety of subjects and are happy to help you. You can either schedule an appointment by calling 217-234-5287 or stop by the Tutoring Center in Webb Hall, room 130. You can set up two or three appointments to prepare for an upcoming test or project or you can establish regular weekly sessions.

Most tutoring takes place in a small-group study session, but tutors will make accommodations for students who need one-on-one assistance. Tutoring is also available to students who want to maintain or boost their grade in a certain subject.

If math is your nemesis, I suggest you stop by the center on any day between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for walk-in math tutoring. No appointment is necessary for this new service.

We understand that it is sometimes difficult to seek help, but we encourage you to reach out to a faculty member or the Tutoring Center staff. I regularly hear from students who say they feel very welcome in the Center and the assistance they receive helps boost their understanding of the course content, and their grade. Remember, there is nothing wrong with seeking additional help. Education is all about helping someone learn, whether in the classroom or in the Tutoring Center. In fact, University of Georgia studies have consistently shown willingness to ask for help is one of the largest differentiators between exceptional achievers and ordinary achievers. And don’t we all strive to be exceptional?

I encourage you to continue on your path to being an exceptional achiever by working hard in your classes and having the courage to ask for help when needed. Know that at Lake Land College, help is just a conversation, a phone call, a few steps or a click of technology away.
